Fashion moves fast. Really fast.

Trends come and go, closets fill up, and clothing that was inexpensive and easy to buy can become just as easy to throw away. But sewing gives us another option.

At Sew Downtown, we’ve always believed sewing is about more than making something beautiful. It’s about learning a skill, understanding how things are made, choosing materials intentionally, and creating something worth keeping.

That’s one of the reasons we’re excited to continue growing our garment sewing community, from expanding our selection of fashion and textile fabrics to offering more opportunities to learn through programs like Stitch Nation.

Bringing Garment Sewing Back to the Sewing Room

For many of us, sewing began with quilting. We fell in love with beautiful fabrics, learned how to use our machines, and discovered just how satisfying it is to turn a piece of fabric into something completely our own.

So why stop at quilts?

Garment sewing opens up an entirely different side of the sewing world. Instead of searching store after store for the right color, fit, fabric, or style, you can begin learning how to create it yourself.

That’s why we’re expanding the textile and fashion fabrics available at Sew Downtown. We want you to be able to explore fabrics beyond traditional quilting cottons and start thinking about what else can come off your sewing machine.

A dress. A jacket. A pair of pants. Activewear. A favorite top made again in another fabric. Even alterations that give something already hanging in your closet a second life.

Stitch Nation Is Helping Us Learn Together

Stitch Nation is a private garment sewing education program available through authorized Baby Lock retailers and hosted by Peggy Sagers, known for Fit 2 Stitch and Silhouette Patterns.

And we love what it brings to our Sew Downtown community.

Garment sewing can feel intimidating when you’re accustomed to quilting. There’s fit to consider, different fabrics to understand, new techniques to learn, and a whole new sewing vocabulary.

But you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Stitch Nation gives garment sewists an opportunity to continue learning, ask questions, improve their techniques, and work toward more professional results.

Whether you’ve been sewing your own clothing for years or you’re looking at a piece of fashion fabric thinking, I wonder if I could actually make something I’d wear, there’s room to keep learning.

Slowing Down in a Fast Fashion World

There’s another reason we think garment sewing matters.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, millions of tons of clothing and footwear are generated as waste in the United States. While sewing our own clothes isn’t going to solve the textile waste problem by itself, learning how to make, mend, alter, repair, and value our clothing can change our individual relationship with what we wear.

Fast fashion encourages us to think of clothing as temporary.

Sewing asks us to slow down.

When you’ve chosen the fabric, cut the pattern, worked through the construction, fixed the mistakes, pressed the seams, and finally tried on something you made yourself, clothing feels different.

You know what went into it.

And learning to sew also gives us the skills to look at something we already own and ask, “Can I fix this?” before asking, “What should I buy to replace it?”

A hem can be repaired. A garment can be altered. A button can be replaced. A piece that doesn’t quite work anymore might be transformed into something that does.

Those skills matter.
